SACRAMENTO, Calif. – A blocked PAT may not seem consequential in most cases but it may have been just enough for American River College to make a big move from No. 9 to No. 3 in this week’s California Community College Sports Information Association football poll released on Monday.
There wasn’t any changes in the top two spots, thanks to wins by No. 1 Fullerton (5-0) – which received all eight first-place votes – and by Riverside City (5-0). The rest of the top 10 had a shakeup after the third- through seventh-ranked teams in last week’s rankings lost this past weekend. That opened the door for American River (4-1) – last year’s state runner-up – which went to previous No. 3 College of San Mateo (4-1) and brought home an exciting 21-20 win that came down to the Beavers blocking the Bulldogs’ game-tying PAT attempt with just over a minute remaining.
The top six teams in the CCCSIA poll match the top six in the Junior College Athletic Bureau statewide poll, also released on Monday.
The loss didn’t do too much to San Mateo’s ranking, slipping it just one position to No. 4 in the CCCSIA rankings. Bakersfield (4-1) turned back previous No. 6 El Camino (3-2), 21-17, and was rewarded with a two-spot improvement to No. 5. Mt. San Antonio (4-1) rolled past Orange Coast, 49-19, and rose five places to No. 6 while Saddleback (4-1), which was upset 44-34 at Ventura (3-2), fell three spots to No. 7. Laney (4-1), unbeaten Sacramento City (5-0) and College of the Siskiyous (4-1) – another of those top-10 teams to fall last week – round out this week’s top 10.
In this week’s CCCAA/CCCFCA Coaches Polls, Fullerton (SCFA National), San Diego Mesa (SCFA American), American River (NCFC National) and Los Medanos (NCFC American) hold down the top spots. All polls are available at the CCCAA website (www.cccaa.org).
It’ll be a quiet week for the CCCSIA’s ranked teams. Each of them have byes and will return to action between Oct. 12 and 14. In fact, there are only 10 games on tap this week in the CCCAA with most teams taking a break from the schedule.
(The poll is conducted by representatives of the CCCSIA and is evenly divided among both Northern California and Southern California region members. The rankings will be conducted on a weekly basis and will be released each Monday for the remainder of the 2017 season).
