Beavers build dam at No. 3 in CCCSIA poll; Fullerton still atop JC Athletic Bureau and CCCSIA rankings
Oct. 23 Polls: CCCSIA l JC Athletic Bureau l CCCAA/CCCFCA Coaches
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – American River College traveled across town to Sacramento City College last weekend for an NCFC National NorCal showdown, not to mention local bragging rights. The Beavers jumped out to a 31-10 halftime lead en route to a 38-24 win, solidifying their No. 3 spot in this week’s California Community College Sports Information poll and giving them their fourth straight win.
American River wasn’t the only highly ranked team in the poll to win on Saturday. In fact, the top five teams held serve in their respective spots while this week’s No. 6 Laney (6-1) and No. 7 Saddleback (5-2) flip-flopped. Top-ranked Fullerton (7-0) beat Saddleback, 38-24, and garnered all eight first-place votes to maintain a stranglehold at No. 1, with Riverside City (7-0), American River (6-1), the College of San Mateo (6-1) and Bakersfield (6-1) also winning and holding their rankings.
The JC Athletic Bureau’s coaches poll kept its top four teams – Fullerton, Riverside, ARC and San Mateo – in their same spots and completed its top 10 with Bakersfield, Laney, City College of San Francisco (5-2), Sacramento City (6-1), Long Beach (5-2) and Ventura (5-2).
The CCCAA/CCCFCA rankings have Fullerton (SCFA National), San Diego Mesa (SCFA American), American River (NCFC National) and Merced (NCFC American) in the No. 1 positions in their respective polls.
Only one game between teams ranked in the CCCSIA top 10 is on tap this weekend but it’s a good one with No. 4 San Mateo heading up to take on No. 8 City College of San Francisco. Sacramento City, ranked 11th, hits the road to face No. 12 College of the Siskiyous (5-2) which is coming off a big 31-14 win against Butte.
Sacramento City’s loss last weekend leaves just Fullerton and Riverside in the world of the unbeatens. Palomar (4-3) will try to change that against the Hornets while El Camino (4-3) looks to do the same against Riverside.
(The poll is conducted by representatives of the CCCSIA and is evenly divided among both Northern California and Southern California region members. The rankings will be conducted on a weekly basis and will be released each Monday for the remainder of the 2017 season).
