SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The College of San Mateo, fueled by a 51-12 rout of previous No. 2 Butte on Saturday, moved itself into elite company in this week’s California Community College Sports Information Association football poll, taking up residence at No. 3, just behind Riverside City and ahead of Saddleback.
Defending state champion Fullerton (4-0) remained the No. 1 team, picking up all eight first-place votes for the second time in the past three weeks, while Riverside (4-0) climbed to No. 2 and the real estate previously owned by Butte (3-1). The Roadrunners’ loss to San Mateo (4-0) dropped them into a tie for seventh with Bakersfield (3-1).
Saddleback (4-0) and College of the Siskiyous (4-0) round out the top five of this week’s rankings and join No. 12 Sacramento City (4-0) and No. 15 (tie) L.A. Valley as the only ranked teams still undefeated. Just five points separate Riverside (106), San Mateo (103) and Saddleback (101) among the pollsters
The top five teams in the CCCSIA poll are the same as in the Junior College Athletic Bureau’s coaches poll, with the JCAB putting American River (3-1), Sacramento City, El Camino (3-1) Laney (3-1) and Butte in its next five.
The second weekly regional polls, voted on by coaches, have also been released with Fullerton (SCFA National), L.A. Valley (SCFA American), San Mateo (NCFC National) and unbeaten (4-0) Merced (NCFC American) holding down the top spots in the four sets of rankings.
Two teams – No. 14 College of the Canyons and L.A. Valley - moved from “receiving votes” to the CCCSIA top 20 while Palomar (3-1) is in a tie for 15th with L.A. Valley. Just two games between top-10 CCCSIA-ranked teams are on this week’s slate. No. 2 San Mateo will host No. 9 American River in a showdown on Saturday while No. 6 El Camino travels to take on No. 7 (tie) Bakersfield.
The CCCSIA, Junior College Athletic Bureau and the regional coaches polls are available at http://cccaasports.org/sports/fball/2017-18/2017_rankings.
(The poll is conducted by representatives of the CCCSIA and is evenly divided among both Northern California and Southern California region members. The rankings will be conducted on a weekly basis and will be released each Monday for the remainder of the 2017 season).
