Hornets still on top of poll but high-scoring El Camino is making some noise
Sept. 18 Polls (PDF): CCCSIA l JC Athletic Bureau l CCCAA/CCCFCA Coaches
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – A week ago, Fullerton College was perfect in the California Community College Sports Information Association football poll, garnering all eight available first-place votes for 120 points. The Hornets went out and won again on Saturday – beating College of the Canyons, 42-28 – but upstart El Camino College isn't letting them do it again, stealing a first-place vote while moving up two spots to No. 6 in this week's poll.
The high-flying Warriors (3-0), who were 4-6 last season, are turning plenty of heads after three weeks, fueled by a state-leading 62.7 ppg., and behind an offense averaging 556.7 ypg. The defense is doing the job as well, giving up a smidgen above 250.0 ypg., and just 11.0 ppg. Defending state champion Fullerton, meanwhile, kept itself on a roll by winnings its ninth straight dating back to last year with a 42-28 win at College of the Canyons on Saturday.
That victory kept the Hornets on top while Riverside City's exciting 28-26 at previous No. 10 Bakersfield is also 3-0 and remains third-ranked. American River (2-1) began the week No. 4 but tumbled eight spots to No. 12 after City College of San Francisco handed the Beavers a 40-26 setback. That allowed Saddleback (3-0) to take over the fourth spot with College of San Mateo (3-0), Mt. San Antonio (3-0), College of the Siskiyous (3-0), Fresno City (2-1) and Long Beach (2-1), completing the top 10.
Bakersfield (2-1), American River, Laney (2-1), poll newcomer Sacramento City (3-0) and Ventura (2-1) finish this week's rankings.
It all sets up what promises to be a big Saturday of CCCAA football that features three games between top-10 teams and the top seven teams facing a ranked opponent. Mt. SAC, ranked seventh, will travel to top-ranked Fullerton, No. 2 Butte hits the road to battle No. 5 San Mateo and No. 6 El Camino faces its stiffest test so far this young season when it goes to No. 4 Saddleback. Riverside will host No. 15 Ventura in the remaining matchup between ranked teams.
(The poll is conducted by representatives of the CCCSIA and is evenly divided among both Northern California and Southern California region members. The rankings will be conducted on a weekly basis and will be released each Monday for the remainder of the 2017 season).
