SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Top-ranked Fullerton College and No. 2 Riverside City College kept their winning ways intact on Saturday but the next five teams in the California Community College Sports Information Association poll weren't as fortunate as just half of the top 10 teams in this week's poll were able to come out victorious.
Fullerton (5-0) rolled past Moorpark, 57-0, to stay unbeaten while Riverside (5-0) kept pace with a 31-20 road win at Cerritos. But upsets took hold after that as No. 3 College of San Mateo (4-1), No. 4 Saddleback (4-1) and No. 5 College of the Siskiyous (4-1) all fell from the ranks of the undefeated with losses on Saturday. San Mateo, which blasted previous No. 3 Butte last week, fell to No. 9 American River (4-1), 21-20, at home after the Beavers blocked an extra point that would've tied the game with just over a minute remaining.
Unranked Ventura (3-2) led Saddleback by a 30-10 score at halftime before the Gauchos erupted for 24 unanswered points in the third quarter to go up, 34-20. But the Pirates' Jake Constantine tossed a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns as Ventura rallied for 44-34 win. Siskiyous (4-1) made the long drive to Modesto Junior College and fell behind 29-0 before scoring in the fourth quarter of its 36-14 defeat.
El Camino (3-2), ranked sixth, lost in a mild upset at Bakersfield (4-1), tied for seventh in the poll, after the Renegades turned a 17-7 fourth-quarter deficit into a 21-17 win with a pair of touchdowns. Butte (3-2), which shared the No. 7 spot with Bakersfield, dropped its second in a row after falling at home to City College of San Francisco (3-2) after the Rams scored 27 straight points for a 34-17 win. Tenth-ranked Laney (4-1) won 34-6 over Contra Costa (0-5) on Friday.
Mt. San Antonio (4-1), Sacramento City (5-0) and Fresno City (3-2), which occupy the 11th through 13th spots in the poll, were also victorious. L.A. Valley (3-1), tied for 15th with Palomar (4-1), lost at Victor Valley (3-1), 10-6, while the Comets beat Chaffey (1-4) by a score of 31-26.
