CCSF WINS RECORD SEVENTH CCCAA FOOTBALL TITLE, 26-14, OVER SADDLEBACK
SAN FRANCISCO -- Namane Modise rushed for 253 yards and two touchdowns as City College of San Francisco captured a record seventh California Community College Athletic Association state football championship with a 26-14 win over visiting Saddleback College of Mission Viejo Saturday afternoon at George Rush Stadium
CCSF (12-1) took a 26-0 lead before the Gauchos (10-3) scored twice in the final 5:32.
Game MVP Modise, a 5-8, 160-pound freshman out of Castro Valley High School, was a back-up during the regular season to all-Bay 6 running back Elijah Dale -- who was injured after leading the Rams with 1,019 yards in their first ten games. Modise paced San Francisco on the ground in its three post-season wins. "This offense was very new to me," he said. "We played the Wing T in high school. I've been working hard on it (the CCSF system) all season. I executed. I took advantage of the opportunity."
CCSF was better known for its aerial attack, with freshman Anthony Gordon leading the state in passing yards (3,692) coming in. The 6-2, 180-pound Terra Nova (Pacifica) grad, was the offensive player of the game, completing 20 of 26 passes for 172 yards and two scores.
That included the only first half tally, a 7-yard toss to sophomore tight end Andrew Vollert (St. Ignatius, San Francisco) for a 6-0 lead with 3:05 left in the first quarter. The game had started with three turnovers on fumbles in the first nine minutes. After defensive end Rod Jones forced and recovered a Saddleback fumble on the Gauchos' 33-yard line, CCSF mounted its go-ahead 7-play drive.
With their defense holding Saddleback in check, the Rams took control in the second half. Modise keyed three long drives to extend the lead to 26-0 with 6:45 left in the game. The Rams went 64 yards in nine plays with Modise reaching paydirt from the one to go up 13-0 with 4:56 left in the third quarter.
CCSF scored on its first two possessions of the fourth quarter. A 61-yard drives was keyed by a spectacular 36-yard run to the four by Modise. Following a penalty, Gordon threw a 6-yard scoring pass to Easop Winston (Serra, San Mateo) and it was 20-0. The Rams got the ball back again on their 18, following a Saddleback punt. Modise promptly ripped off his longest run, 57 yards, to set-up the final CCSF TD. He ran that in from the five with 6:45 remaining. Modise had 37 carries in the game. He also returned a kickoff 14 yards to total 267 all-purpose yards.
Saddleback prevented a shutout as quarterback Johnny Stanton (Santa Margarita) finally got to show his prowess. The 6-2, 230-pound transfer from Nebraska completed 28 of 47 passes for 303 yards and two scores, including a 53-yarder to his favorite target, Dominic Collins (El Toro), with 5:32 left. The final TD was three yards to Collins with 1:50 remaining. The Gauchos failed to execute their onside kick attempts, however, and could not get back into contention.
Stanton was the leading Saddleback rusher (as usual) with 42 yards – for a total offense of 345. Collins had 11 receptions for 159 yards -- and finished with 14 TD catches for the year.
Gordon was sacked four times. There were no interceptions in the game.
CCSF, ranked No. 1 in the state (and also in some national polls), has now won its last nine games.
No. 4 state-ranked Saddleback saw its 10-game win streak come to an end.
Although it was the seventh official CCCAA state football crown for San Francisco, it was the first for Coach Jimmy Collins, in his first year. He took over for George Rush – who had led the Rams to all of their previous crowns.
A key to the victory "was our ability to stop the run," said Collins. "Our defensive staff did a great job of coming up with a plan. And we have great team speed."
Defensive player of the game was CCSF soph linebacker Nick Pierotti (Terra Nova). He led the Rams with 13 tackles, including a sack. Jones, the Bay 6 defensive player of the year and the National (state championship) Division leader in sacks with 15.5, added one more sack to his tally, He had two additional tackles for loss and two pass break-ups.
Antoine Porter (Mission, San Francisco) was CCSF's top pass catcher, with five for 53 yards. Winston, had four receptions for 45 yards and Erik Phillip (St. Marys, Albany) four for 25 yards.
Saddleback defensive leaders, with 13 tackles apiece, were sophomore defensive backs Marcus Meredith (San Clemente) and Zachary Wade (Newport Harbor).
