BROWN'S CSM RECORD 7 TD PASSES NOT ENOUGH: CHABOT WINS BULLDOG BOWL, 76-55.
SAN MATEO -- Dru Brown threw for a College of San Mateo single game record seven touchdowns and a Bulldog Bowl record 425 yards -- but it wasn't enough to outscore visiting Chabot College, which won the state football playoff opener, 76-55, Saturday afternoon at College Heights Stadium.
Chabot advances to the California Community College Athletic Association semifinals at City College of San Francisco next Saturday to determine the Northern California champion and state finals host. CCSF (10-1) defeated visiting Butte (6-5), 30-13, Saturday. Long Beach (10-1) will play at Saddleback (9-2) for the Southern California title.
CSM finished with a 7-4 record. Chabot (9-2) got a bowl record 269 rushing yards and four TDs from running back Ondre Rudolph. Gladiators quarterback Jose Ferreira completed 17 of 23 passes for 299 yards and three touchdowns and ran for a fourth score.
There were 18 touchdowns and 1,296 yards of offense by the two teams, including a bowl record 717 yards by Chabot. CSM's total 445 passing yards was also a record. But the Gladiators limited San Mateo's state-leading rushing offense to 134 net yards.
Chikwa Nzerem caught six passes for 101 yards and three CSM scores. Miles Willis had touchdowns on both of his receptions. Aaron Short and Devontae Young also caught TD passes.
After wins in the ten previous Bulldog Bowl games, CSM lost for the first time. The 2009 Bulldog Bowl win over visiting Reedley, 30-21, was also a state playoff game and advanced San Mateo to the state championship game that year.
Rudolph was selected as game MVP with his bowl records 260 rushing yards, four TDs, and longest rushing TD (87 yards). Ferreira was the Chabot player of the game.
Brown was the CSM player of the game, completing 21 of 37 passes for his 425 yards and seven TDs, an average of 20.2 yards per completion.
TD Record: The former CSM record for touchdown passes was six, set by Sal Genilla in 1985, vs. De Anza, and equaled by David Singleton in 2007, vs. Chabot.
