Riverside Football Narrowly Takes Over Top Spot In Rankings
Riverside & San Mateo Pace Jam at Top
San Mateo -- Notes on the official 2014 California Community College Football Coaches Association state poll, as compiled by the JC Athletic Bureau.
Riverside City College and College of San Mateo are the new state poll pacesetters this week -- by narrow margins over Mt. San Antonio and City College of San Francisco.
That quartet shared all of the first place poll votes after defending state champion Butte and runner-up Fullerton suffered their first defeats of 2014. Riverside moved to the top after a 37-34 double overtime win at Saddleback. Now No. 3 Mt. SAC turned back visiting Fullerton, 34-10.
No. 5 Santa Rosa beat visiting Butte, 24-17, in OT. It was the first loss in 17 games, dating to 2012, for now No. 9 Butte -- which will try to rebound Saturday by hosting new northern leader San Mateo. CSM has lost only to Butte since 2012 and has a National (state championship) Division-leading 5-game win skein. No. 1 Riverside visits Grossmont.
