SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The field is set for the 2017 California Community College Athletic Association Baseball Championship tournament next weekend in Fresno after Santa Rosa and Ohlone secured their spots from Northern California with decisive third-game victories on Sunday, while El Camino upset top-seeded Orange Coast to join Grossmont from the south.
The tournament will get underway on Saturday at Fresno City College with El Camino and Santa Rosa playing at noon and Ohlone and Grossmont battling in the nightcap at 6 p.m. The double-elimination tournament will continue through Monday.
Ohlone (42-5) advanced after beating Sacramento City College on Friday, 5-4, thanks to Jake Alvarado's walk-off single to right in the 10th inning. The Panthers came back to even the series on Saturday, scoring the winning run in their last at-bat. With a Sacramento City runner at third with just one out, Ohlone elected to load the bases with a pair of intentional walks to set up a potential double play. An infield grounder followed but the Panthers will able to beat the play at first, allowing the winning run to cross.
The Renegades clinched the series and a trip to Fresno with a 5-1 win on Sunday.
San Joaquin Delta scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh on Saturday during an 8-6 win over Santa Rosa that evened their series at a game apiece but the Mustangs couldn't repeat the magic on Sunday after Santa Rosa (35-9) posted a 5-0 shutout to earn its berth.
The weekend stunner came in Southern California where El Camino (39-9), which lost Friday's opener to Orange Coast won on both Saturday and Sunday on the road to advance. The Warriors did it in dramatic fashion, as well, rallying from an early 5-0 deficit with two runs in the fourth and then a four-run seventh as they went on to win, 9-5. First baseman Connor Underwood went 3 for 5 with three RBIs, including a homerun.
They'll join Grossmont (35-7-1), which swept Long Beach City on Friday and Saturday to punch the state tournament's first ticket.
