SAN MATEO, Calif. - A short memory is a good thing, particulary when an 18-0 drubbing to the No. 1 seeded team is at the forefront of those thoughts. But Los Medanos College proved that it's possible to replace those bad memories with good ones after the Mustangs rallied for a pair of road wins on Saturday to stun top-seeded College of San Mateo and earn a berth into the CCCAA Baseball Northern California Super Regionals.
The Bulldogs, who entered the weekend series with a 33-6 record, seemed poised to move into the next round after their pasting of Los Medanos on Friday. The Mustangs, though, were not about to give up. Vincent Spencer gave up a first-inning run in the first game but then teamed with Llewelyn Stone to pitch shutout baseball the rest of the way en route to a 3-1 win.
In the decisive third game, Los Medanos opened a 4-1 lead only to see the College of San Mateo bounce back to tie it with two runs in the bottom of the eighth. But in the top of the 10th, a single by Ochoa, followed by a wild pitch and two errors were enough to give the Mustangs the go-ahead run. They then made it stand up by holding the Bulldogs scoreless in the bottom half of the 10th, which ended on a 5-4-3 double play.
The victory sends Los Medanos into the Super Regional Round where it'll face the No. 2 seed, Santa Rosa (30-8), beginning on Friday. All other Super Regional matchups have been decided against fourth-seeded Sacramento City's opponent which will either be Feather River or College of the Sequoias. Their series is tied, 1-1, with the deciding game pushed back to Sunday at noon because of rain.
