SANTA ANA, Calif. - Cypress College right-hander Andrew Quezada threw a game for the record books on Tuesday against host Santa Ana, tossing a no-hitter while facing just one batter above the minimum during the Chargers' 11-0 Orange Empire Conference matchup at Don Sneddon Field.
The win lifted Cypress to a 15-5 overall record and a 2-2 league mark while the Dons dropped to 14-6 and 0-4.
Quezada, who improved to 5-1, was nearly perfect on Tuesday. He retired the first 17 batters he faced before walking Ricardo Salinas with two outs in the sixth inning. Another runner reached base on an error in the eighth but Quezada eventually forced a inning-ending double play. He retired 15 batters on groundouts, including seven in a row between the first and third innings.
Quezada got all the offensive support he needed in the second frame when the Chargers put three up on the board. They added a crooked number an inning later, adding seven runs for a 10-0 lead after three. Paul Gomez had an RBI-double to left-center while Angel Ortiz brought in two more with his single up the middle during the second-inning uprising.
Brandon Alamo had two doubles for Cypress and knocked in two runs while Ortiz had 4 RBIs.
The teams will have a rematch on Thursday at 2 p.m. at Cypress.
