CCCAA Student-Athletes in the 2016 MLB Draft
Sacramento, CA . . . California Community College baseball has a rich history of student-athletes entering the MLB draft with this year being no different. With so many student-athletes coming through the CCCAA it is possible that a few have been overlooked, but in the 2016 MLB draft a total of 47 current or former California Community College Athletic Association student-athletes were drafted. Whether they came straight out of the CCC system or transferred to a four-year institution and were then drafted, the talent level of CCCAA athletes continues to be there. Leading the class this year was former Chabot College left handed pitcher, Joey Lucchesi. Lucchesi was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the fourth round with the 114th overall pick.
Lucchesi played two seasons at Chabot and was a major contributor to their 2014 season. On the year Lucchesi posted a 9-3 record with a 3.23 ERA. He helped lead the Gladiators to a 32-10 record where they claimed the top Northern CA seed entering the playoffs. Chabot ended up losing their best-of-three series to Sequoias in the third round of the regionals. Lucchesi was named to the All-Coast Golden Gate Conference team as well as the All-Regional team. In 2014 Lucchesi transferred to Southeast Missouri State University where he was named OVC Pitcher of the Year and earned First Team All-OVC honors.
Other Notables
Shane Carrier – Carrier led Fullerton College into the 2016 super regionals where they lost the best-of-three series to Cypress. Carrier played two seasons with the Hornets where as a sophomore he was among the league leaders in virtually all batting statistical categories. He was atop the CCCAA in at bats (186), hits (72), doubles (17), home runs (12), RBI's (59), slugging percentage (.694) and led the state in total bases (129). He earned All-Regional honors and was named to the ABCA/PAD All-American 2nd team. Carrier was drafted in the 8th round by the Minnesota Twins.
Scott Serigstad – Serigstad played for Orange Coast College in 2015 as a sophomore where he helped lead the Pirates to a CCCAA State Championship. Serigstad was a versatile pitcher both starting and coming out of the bullpen. He led the 2015 Pirates staff in game appearances with 25, which included starting and earning the W in the state title game where he went six innings allowing just one hit and no runs. On the season he had a record of 7-3 with three saves and a 2.32 ERA. After the state title season he transferred to Cal State Fullerton where he made 27 game appearances with a 1.22 ERA. Serigstad was drafted in the 15th round by the Milwaukee Brewers.
Dillon Persinger – Persinger was the drafted in the 17th round, No.521, to the LA Dodgers. He played second base for Golden West College during the 2015 & 2016 seasons, having a solid career with the Rustlers. In 2016 Persinger was named the Orange Empire Conference Player of the Year, Southern CA Player of the Year, and was on the ABCA/PAD All-American 1st team. He led the CCCAA in doubles (20) and on-base percentage (.523) and was third in batting average (.417) while playing in one of the more competitive conferences in the state. Persinger helped to lead his team to the state championship game where they fell to Santa Rosa.
