Game 7 recap coming soon
Golden West Holds Off Santa Rosa, 12-10, Forcing A Game 7
Fresno, CA - Golden West carried their hot hitting from last night into the start of todays game. In the first two innings the Rustlers put up eight runs holding their lead for the remainder of the game. They needed Joshua Gogue from the pen, who won their previous game in this championship tournament, to close out today's contest after Santa Rosa made a late push.
The Bear Cubs started off the game with a double down the line and were able to score Mitch West with a single by Jeff Bart after one out. Golden West in the bottom of the first started the game with Chris Rodriguez getting hit by a pitch and Chris Gilbody got on with a walk. A wild pitch advanced the runners brining up Cody Marshall who hit a single to tie the game. Michael Fuchs doubled down the right field line adding two runs to the Rustler's total which were the last runs of the inning.
Santa Rosa in the second was able to put up a run to make the score 3-2 after an inning and a half but Golden West was not going to stay quiet in the second. Rodriguez was hit for the second time in the game and after a sacrifice the Rustlers went back to work. Dillon Persinger was hit and Marshal had an infield single. Fuchs then hit a hard ground ball up the middle for a single and the ball was thrown away allowing the runners to move up a base. Daniel Maguire then got on base with another error that scored a run. A wild pitch and throwing error cleared the bases scoring two and that allowed the Golden West to put up five runs for the inning.
Santa Rosa in the fourth was able to put up a run in the fourth after a triple by Bryce Nagata who was drove home by Jake Scheiner on a sacrifice fly. In the bottom of the inning defensive miscues allowed for another Rustler score. Santa Rosa was able to put up two runs highlighted by a Charlie Magana RBI single. In the sixth the Rusters scored two more runs off of errors by the Bear Cubs.
Santa Rosa in top of the ninth looked to see if they could put up a comeback as epic as the one Golden West had last night. Down by 6 runs to start the inning hits by George Foster, Myles Andrews and Chase Cianfichi ended Soren Yarnall's day on the mound. A wild pitch brought in another run and Mitch West doubled in another, forcing the Rusters to bring in their closer Gogue with no outs in the inning. With a strikeout brought up Northern California MVP Jake Scheiner who doubled to bring in the final run for the Bear Cubs. After a flyout to left field the Rustler's were able to pickoff Scheiner from second base, giving Golden West the 12-10 win.
Golden West Comes Back To Win In The 10th, 6-5, Advances To Title Game Against SRJC
Fresno, CA - The Golden West Rustlers gave Cypress a little bit of their own medicine. Cypress was known for their late inning heroics but this time it was Golden West who pulled off some late magic, earning the win in extra innings. After 7 2/3 innings of being shutout, Golden West put together a rally scoring five runs and tying the game, led by Daniel Mcguire's two run double. Forcing extra innings, the tenth started with a double by Michael Fuchs who then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Danial Maguire then hit a sharp ground ball to the shortstop who bobbled the ball and was charged with an error but his play stopped the run from scoring, bringing up John Shattles who hit a deep fly ball well over the head of the right fielder scoring Fuchs and giving Golden West the 6-5 win.
Double plays are a pitcher's best friends and both teams relied on them early in the game. Golden West had two in the first two innings which helped keep the Cypress Chargers off the board while the Chargers were able to limit the damage from the Rustlers' to two runs in the first inning though the rally started after the double play. Will Aguilar singled followed by a single by Elija Skipps bringing Aguilar to third. With runners on the corners, Nick Reeser and Bo Coolen had RBI singles to give the Chargers a 2-0 lead after one inning.
Golden West allowed their first five runs with two outs including a two run blast by Nick Reeser which chased Brett Mays from the game in the top of the fifth. Cypress was in desperate need of having a pitcher go long in tonight's game and Henry Martinez was up to the task for the first 7 2/3 innings. Martinez left the game with the bases loaded for Sebastian Lopez to face Maguire who then hit a line drive double scoring two runners, forcing Cypress to bring in Tripp Aversa who threw a wild pitch to bring in another run, then walked Shattles to put the possible winning run on base. A bunt by Philip Knapp scored Maguire. A basehit by Tyler Depreta scored the tying run in Shattles and that was the end of Aversa's night, bringing in Joey Leavitt. Leavitt was able to stop the bleeding with a fielder's choice to end the eighth.
Golden West with the win advances to the CCCAA Baseball Championship game where they'll face Santa Rosa Junior College. Cypress ends their season with a 31-15 record.
Bear Cubs Look Dominant In 6-2 Win, Advance To State Title Game
Fresno, CA - Santa Rosa Bear Cubs jumped to an early lead over Golden West scoring four runs in the first inning and held on through the checkered flag with Matt Estes and Jered Noonan leading the way from the mound.
The first inning for the Bear Cubs started off with an error by the third baseman and on the very next play Bryce Nagata hit a sinking fly-ball to centerfield which got below the centerfielders glove and rolled all the way to the 400 foot mark which resulted in an inside-the-park homerun. Northern California MVP Jake Scheiner hit a ball through the left side and after an out Jeff Bart stepped up to the plate and lifted one to left-center which cleared both the homerun wall and the protective fence above it.
Santa Rosa got their final two runs with Myles Andrews hitting a double, then advancing to third base on a wild pitch. Charlie Magana singled which brought home Andrews along with knocking out the Rustlers' starting pitcher Cody Marshall. The final run scored on a walk that brought home Magana.
Golden West scored in the fifth inning with Tyler Depreta's single that drove in Danny Maguire. In the ninth Golden West showed some life with Michael Fuchs single and later advancing to second on a wild pitch. John Shattles singled which put runners on the corners. A double down the left field line by Philiip Knapp scored Fuchs. With one out Golden West was unable to score another run.
Santa Rosa earns the 6-2 victory and punches their ticket to Monday's state championship game while Golden West will play Cypress at 5:15pm for a shot at the second position in tomorrow's title game.
Cypress Eliminates Delta With 11-7 Victory
Fresno, CA - Cypress College starting pitcher, Andrew Quezada, threw 124 pitches to finish all nine innings leading the Chargers to an 11-7 victory over the San Joaquin Delta Mustangs, eliminating them from the tournament.
The Chargers scored in four of the eight innings they batted in, including three innings where they scored multiple runs. Eight of the nine starting Charger hitters recorded hits including five players with multiple hits. The Mustangs scored in four of the nine innings but unlike the Chargers they put up multiple runs in only two.
For the first five innings Mustang's pitcher Alex Dentoni pitched well, but with two outs and one runner on base the Chargers broke out with pinch hitter Santospage singling through the right side. With two runners on and a walk to Aaron Case the bases were loaded for Brandon Gonzalez. Gonzalez singled down the line which plated two runners causing the Mustangs to remove their starting pitcher. William Aguilar then doubled off relief pitcher Jacob Rosales and was thrown out at third base but not before two Chargers crossed the plate.
In the seventh inning Cypress was able to put up another four runs after the inning started with a double by Elijah Skipps causing the Mustangs to bring in reliever Calvin Riley. Riley started off with a quick strike out before things went downhill. Bo Coolen singled and advanced to second on the throw putting runners at second and third which caused Mustangs Head Coach Reed Peters to walk Nathan Rodriguez to load the bases. Paul Gomez doubled in two runs followed back-to-back bunt plays where the Mustangs' second baseman couldn't cover first in time, ending the day for Riley.
The Mustangs were able to push across a run in the ninth but was too little too late. Delta's streak of two consecutive CCCAA State Championship Games ends and puts the Chargers into tonight's late game.
Santa Rosa Holds Onto Late Lead To Earn The 6-5 Win
Fresno, CA - The Santa Rosa Bear Cubs were led by the Most Valuable Player in North, Jake Scheiner, along with the Pitcher of the Year in the North, Alec Rennard. Their shortstop Scheiner struck out his first time at bat and that seemed to be the only issue he had on the day. He followed his first at-bat with three hits in his next three plate appearances, including a monstrous homerun to left center to clear the high fence at John Euless Ballpark.
The pitching combo of Rennard and Anthony Bender held the Cypress Chargers to 6 hits and just 2 earned runs. Cypress pitcher Tylor Megil had 7 strikeouts in his first 5 1/3 innings of work but allowed all six runs given up by the Chargers.
Myles Andrews had two hits for the victories Bear Cubs while the only player with multiple hits for the Chargers was leadoff hitter Aaron Case. The Chargers were able to mount their normal late inning heroics but unlike many times this year they were unable to pull out the late victory. The 9th inning started off with a hit by Nick Reeser down the left field line followed with a Bo Coolen walk, putting the tying runs on the bases for Cypress. Nathan Rodriguez put a bunt down the third base line that was thrown away by the third baseman. Reeser was running hard scoring on the sacrifice. That left the tying run on second and the winning run on first. With no outs a Paul Gomez sac bunt moved the runners up to second and third. With what looked like a tough situation with the winning run in scoring position, Bender showed great grit and was able to get pinch hitter Cory Wildhagen to strikeout and leadoff hitter Case to hit a fly ball that leftfield Mitch West put away for the final out of the game.
Golden West Defeats Delta, 8-6, In Game 1 At State
Fresno, CA - San Joaquin Delta made the trip back to Fresno where they have been runner-up in state each of the two previous years. They enter the state tournament this year with a perfect 6-0 postseason record. Golden West came to state winning their first game of each postseason series, extending that streak today by defeating Delta, 8-6, to open the state tournament.
Delta jumped on the board in the 1st inning by Nik Poirier with a double to right field and advanced to second on a ground ball, scoring on a wild pitch.
Golden West was able to tie the game in the bottom of the 2nd when John Shattles singled home Cody Marshall. Delta was able to quickly take the lead in the third putting up three runs by doubles from Eddie Sievers and Vidales, along with a single by Nik Poirier. Golden West waited just over an inning when Marshall lead off the bottom of the fourth with a single. On two outs John Shattles had an infield single where he slid head first into first base to beat the throw by the second baseman. Knapp and Tyler Depreta proceeded to get on base, loading the bases for leadoff hitter Christ Rodriguez. Rodriguez hit a fly ball just outside the reach of the diving center fielder for a triple which cleared the bases to give Golden West a one run lead. Delta scored in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly by Shea Sbranti to tie the game until the bottom of the eighth when Delta recaptured the lead with Poirer's single to right field, who eventually scored on a fly ball off the wood bat of Joe Montes down the right field line for a double.
Delta showed great defense through the first seven innings of this afternoon's game, but let that slip in the 8th when Mustangs gained a one run lead. Their closer Calvin Riley entered the game to replace Mikey Wright. The inning started with an error on the second baseman, with the runner advancing to third after two outs and then the wheels came off. A single by John Shattles up the middle followed by a poor throw to first allowed Shattles to advance on the play. Phillip Knapp hit a ball to first which went off the first baseman and into right field for an error. A great throw by Marcus Vidales to the plate would have been in time, but was dropped by the catcher and allowed Shattles to score. Golden West put up another run later in the inning to finish the game with eight runs.
Delta will now play at 10:00am on Sunday, facing the loser of tonight's game between Santa Rosa and Cypress. Golden West advances in the winner's bracket and will play the winner of tonight's game on Sunday at 2:00pm.
