Fresno City beats Sequoias for coach Ron Scott's 900th career win
BY ANTHONY GALAVIZ, THE FRESNO BEE
Fresno City College beat College of the Sequoias 5-1 Saturday in a Central Valley Conference baseball game for Ron Scott's 900th coaching victory.
Drayton Riekenberg, making his first start of the season after transferring from Cowley JC in Arkansas City, Kansas, struck out 10 in 8⅔ innings to power the Rams' victory at Euless Ballpark.
Scott, 900-329-2 in 27 seasons as Fresno City coach, joins two other coaches in the 900-win club in California junior college baseball. Retired Don Sneddon of Santa Ana is the leader at 1,071-384-3 and current Cypress coach Scott Pickler is at 937-468-4.
"It's a testament of a lot of hard work by a lot of players," Scott said. "Surprising how fast it happens. I can remember the first game, first win. Before you know it, we are at 900. We have a lot more to go.
"More importantly, it's win No. 8" in the CVC, Scott said. Fresno City is 8-1 in the conference (rebounding from a Thursday loss at COS) and 13-3 overall. The Giants are 2-4 and 7-9.
Len Bourdet, Scott's predecessor who went 722-374 in 31 seasons as Rams coach, threw out the first pitch Saturday.
Riekenberg had been out a week with a groin injury.
Scott Desmond got the last out for his fourth save.
Zak Taylor, Christian Funk and Scott Silva each drove in a run for the Rams.
"I'm truly blessed to be a part of this team," Funk said. "No one deserves it more than Coach Scott."
