Former Roadrunner, Andrew Morales, Is 71st Pick In MLB Draft
Andrew Morales was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals as the 71st pick in the draft on Thursday.
Morales, a senior at UC-Irvine, is ranked 4th in the country with 17 starts and 128 strikeouts. He won his 10th game of the season against the UNLV rebels during Regionals of the NCAA baseball tournament. The 6-0, 195 pound Morales is 10-2 with a 1.64 ERA for Irvine and has held hitters to a .182 batting average. He is expected to start Saturday's Super Regional game as he and his teammates continue their season against Josh Holliday's Oklahoma State Cowboys in the Stillwater Super Regional beginning tomorrow at 8:30 pm. CDT. Morales is from Covina, Calif., and attended Rio Hondo Community College before finishing his collegiate career at UC-Irvine.
During his time at Rio Hondo, Morales earned All-Foothill Conference first-team both years and was named the 2012 Foothill Conference Player of the Year while leading his team to the State championship game. In addition, he was named a CCCBCA All-American and Pitcher of the Year and had a two year record of 21-1 on the mound, just to name some of his accolades.
Morales is the first CCCAA student-athlete drafted in the 2014 MLB Draft.
