FRESNO – Oxnard College staked fireballer Patrick Weigel to a 7-2 lead after the first four innings of their California Community College Athletic Association elimination game on Sunday at John Euless Ballpark. Unfortunately, Weigel struggled with his command and was removed in the top of the fifth inning against College of the Sequoias, who went on to score five times in the inning, en route to a 10-9 victory. The win by the Giants (34-12) advances them to the evening game, while the Condors (33-12) see their season come to an end.
For the Giants, they got to Weigel in the fifth inning, which started with Rudy Navarro reaching on a throwing error. Dillon Kelly was then hit by the next pitch, followed by a Wyatt Champlin base hit. Chris Calistro and Blake Edmonson started the five-run rally with RBI singles, which chased Weigel. Blake Redman, the closer for the Condors came in and surrendered a bases-clearing double to pinch-hitter Davy Vartanian, which knotted the game.
The Giants scored three more unanswered runs, with Ross Feely bunting in a run, while Navarro made it a 10-7 game with a sacrifice fly. Oxnard closed the gap to 10-9 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, thanks to four straight base hits.
Edmonson, who went 3-for-5,, came in to pitch the final 2 1/3 innings for his state-leading 17th save of the season. It was the longest outing of the season for Edmonson, while Redman (five innings, 10 hits, three runs) suffered the loss to fall to 6-2 on the season.
The teams combined for 31 hits, with Dustyn Cook leading the way for Oxnard with four hits, while Jake Mavropolous went 3-for-4 with a three-run home run. Nine different batters had a hit for Sequoias.
