COS baseball advances in NorCal playoffs
The College of the Sequoias baseball team's magical season continues.
The No. 5-seeded Giants outlasted No. 4 Sierra 5-4 on Sunday to win the best-of-three series in three games and advance to the third round of the Northern California Regional playoffs.
The Giants (31-10) will play at No. 1 Chabot (31-8) in a best-of-three series beginning Friday. The winner advances to the state championships, which will be May 23-25 in Fresno.
COS won the first game of the series 4-2 on Friday, but lost 6-4 Saturday to force a decisive Game 3.
The Giants scored four runs in Sunday's game to take control and they held off a late Sierra rally.
Wyatt Champlin led the way, going 3-for-5 with two doubles, three RBIs and two runs scored. Davy Vartanian had a solid day, going 2-for-4 with one RBI, Ross Feeley went 2-for-3 with two walks, Dillon Kelley went 1-for-4 with a double, walk and a run scored, and Michael Navarette went 1-for-1 with a double and an RBI.
The Giants used four pitchers in the game. Blake Edmonson pitched 1 2/3 innings in relief to pick up victory.
In the other Northern California regional, No. 2 San Joaquin Delta (31-9) will host No. 3 Santa Rosa (29-12).
In the South, Orange Coast (31-9) will play Southwestern College (29-12), and Oxnard (31-10) will play Santa Barbara (27-13).
