SAN MATEO -- College of San Mateo's baseball team continued its streaking run to the state playoffs with a 1-0 victory over Coast Golden Gate Conference champion Chabot Wednesday afternoon – ending the Gladiators' state-pacesetting 22-game winning streak.
It was the young Bulldogs third straight victory and sixth in their last seven games. They are looking forward to a favorable seed for the state playoffs, which begin next week. Chabot still has the best record among all of the state's 86 teams at 27-7 and had already finished Coast play at 21-1.
San Mateo, 22-13 overall, will take a 14-7 Coast Golden Gate record into Thursday's regular season finale with visiting last place De Anza (3-30, 3-18) at 2:30 p.m. CSM will finish third in the conference regardless of the outcome.
CSM had lost its last two meetings with Chabot each by a single run, 5-4 and 4-3.
This time starter Skyler Fuss scattered five hits over eight innings. He tired starting the ninth and walked a pair. Keone Cabinian came in, getting an infield pop-up and striking out two -- including Chabot's Ivan Perez to end it -- for his first save.
San Mateo scored the game's only run in the fifth when Dane Vande Guchte singled to right to score Tyler Carlson – who had singled and advanced on Dominic Orlando's sacrifice bunt.
The Bulldogs stranded nine runners. Chabot left six runners on base – with Perez being left each of his three previous at bats prior to the final K.
Chabot's previous loss was Feb. 25 in the conference opener at West Valley, 6-1.
