Mother Nature wins battle; Sierra takes beach volleyball war

ROSEVILLE, Calif. - The Sierra College beach volleyball team swept visiting West Valley and Gavilan in a storm-ravaged Coast Conference battle Friday at Harry Crabb Park in Roseville. The Wolverines (6-2 Coast) clinched the 3-2 win over West Valley (3-4) on the match's final set as Sierra's 1's pair, Stefanie Christofferson and Kylie Shinn outlasted the Vikings’ Hayley Sturgeon and Arianna Newcomb 21-19, 19-21, 15-10.
Grace Lemmo and Maddy Rowland (4's), and Bre York and Bella Orteza (5's) recorded straight-set sweeps against the Vikings. The late match against Gavilan (2-5) also came down to the final set. Wolverine 3's Ryan Blackwood and Kalala Strickland notched the final three points in the decisive third set to hold off Gavilan's Courtney Borja and Claire Gerard 21-17, 12-21, 15-12. Lemmo and Rowland (4's) and York and Orteza (5's) secured straight-set victories to set the stage for a 3-2 Wolverine win.
Sierra heads to Feather River next Friday (4/14) to take on the league-leading Golden Eagles (8-0) and Redwoods (0-8).
