COD Softball scores 5 in the 6th, sneaks past Jaguars, 8-6

COD (18-7) had a huge outburst of five runs in the bottom of the sixth to come from behind and snag the Southwestern Jaguars of Chula Vista (12-8), 8-6.

The Jaguars would get onto the board first in the top of the first, scoring a run on a two out single to left field, giving the visitors a 1-0 advantage. Desert would respond with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning on a one out triple to right by sophomore right handed starting pitcher Lauren Robinson (La Quinta H.S.), scoring a run and a sacrifice fly one batter later gave the Roadrunners a 2-1 lead.

Desert would add to their lead in the second, with freshman left fielder Alejandra Ramirez (Rancho Mirage H.S.) scoring on an error by a Southwestern infielder, giving the Roadrunners a 3-1 lead.

The Jaguars would put two more runs across in the third and fourth innings and another run in the fifth to take a 6-3 lead.

Then the Desert bats really did some damage, scoring five runs in the bottom of the sixth, off of the Southwestern starting pitcher, which they hadn't touched up since the second inning.

Freshman second baseman Dakota Hansen (Myrtle Beach, SC) would lead off the inning with a triple to center and would come home on a one out single to left by sophomore right fielder Aleyna Velasquez (Palm Desert H.S.), getting the Roadrunners to within two, 6-4.

After a pair of singles to right field, the bases were loaded for Desert and Robinson singled to left field to score Velasquez, keeping the bases packed and getting the getting the Roadrunners to within one, 6-5.

Freshman first baseman Jaidyn Olson (Rancho Mirage H.S.) would punch a single to center field, scampering to second base on an error by the Jaguars outfielder, scoring freshman designated player and leadoff hitter Elizabeth Olivas (Thermal Coachella Valley) and freshman shortstop Davia Hines (Palm Springs H.S.), giving Desert a one run lead, 7-6. Ramirez would add an insurance run later in the inning, bringing home Robinson, to give the home side an 8-6 lead.

Freshman right handed relief pitcher Nicole Rodriguez (Indio Shadow Hills) would toss the final three innings of the game to collect her seventh win in ten appearances.

Olivas would go 1 for 3 with two runs scored and Robinson would go 2 for 3 with two runs scored and two runs batted in on the afternoon.

Olson would go 3 for 3 with three RBI's and sophomore catcher Natalie Avila (Rancho Mirage H.S.) would go 2 for 4. Velasquez would go 2 for 3 with a run scored out of the nine hole in the lineup.
