Warriors Grab First Conference Win Over Compton

TORRANCE, Calif. -  The El Camino College women's soccer team grabbed their first conference win of the season in a 3-1 win over Compton College on Friday afternoon at the ECC Soccer Field. 

The Warriors (3-10-4, 1-3) grabbed their first win in over a month.  For the month of October, the Warriors had two draws and six losses.  

The Warriors dominated for most of the game.  However, a red card in the 64th minute to the starting El Camino keeper, Kelly Gallagher, resulted in a more balanced game for both teams to finish the game.  

The Warriors had three different goal scorers for the day.  Monica Bernardino scored her 9th goal of the season in the 18th minute.  Isabel Alba played a nice through ball to Monica Bernardino who was able to slot it into the far corner past the keeper to make it 1-0.

Jessica Varela grabbed her first goal of the season in the 32nd minute to make it 2-0.  Jennifer Villarruel played a nice through ball to a streaking Varela who was able to one time a shot into the near corner of the net.  

Compton College grabbed a goal right at the end of the second half.  After a corner kick by Compton, Angie Martinez scored on a loose ball in the 6-yard box.

The Warriors got off to a flying start in the second half.  Mariana Garcia scored her second goal of the season in the 47th minute.  After a corner kick, Jessica Varela was able to play a ball to Garcia inside the 6-yard box.  She made a move past a defender and shot from point blank into the upper left corner of the net to make it a 3-1 game. 

Kelly Gallagher was red carded in the 64th minute for dissent.  Desiree Jeanes was able to step in and man the net for the rest of the game.  Jeanes made one save in 26 minutes. Gallagher was credited with four saves and the win in 65 minutes.  

The Warriors head to Cerritos College on Tuesday, November 5th for their next game.  Kick-off is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
