WOMEN’S BASKETBALL:  SOPHOMORE NIGHT SUCCESS

FC welcomed Santa Ana College to the Hornets Nest on Wednesday night and held off the Dons 64-60 in a needed Orange Empire Conference game.

It was Sophomore Night for Fullerton as head coach Marcia Foster honored the second-year players for their dedication to the classroom and team. Sophomores honored were Kate Salas, Moriah Serrano, Shenise West, Jessica Quirarte, Hannah Jones, and Amber Tabbasam.

The Hornet victory was much needed keeping the team locked in third place in the Orange Empire Conference with an 8-4 record. Fullerton's overall record now stands at 17-10 as they are in the hunt for a playoff spot.  Meanwhile, the Santa Ana loss lands the team at 6-7 in the OEC with an overall record of 12-15.

Fullerton jumped out to 10-5 lead in the beginning of the 1st quarter, but the Dons pushed back getting within a one (12-11) on a layup by Cheryl Caldera at the 4:52 mark. The Hornets continued to press on taking a 23-18 lead into the 2nd quarter.

A shot in the paint by Angela Zendejas gave Fullerton a 25-18 advantage, but Santa Ana would not go away snatching a 32-29 lead over FC at 3:35. By half time, the Hornets were behind 38-35.

The Hornets swung the lead back in their favor 39-38 on a lay-in by Hannah Jones to begin the 3rd quarter. From there, the fight was on as both teams punched it out throughout the quarter. Fullerton came out on top heading into the 4th (52-49) and did not let up.

FC successfully held off the Dons throughout the 4th pushing their largest lead of 9 points (62-53) to the last minute of the ball game. It was not an easy win for the Hornets as the game featured 6 ties and 8 lead changes.

Angela Zendejas had a team-high 14 points for Fullerton. Hannah Jones put up 10 points with 8  rebounds, while Katie Salas had 9 points with 6 rebounds. Moriah Serrano had 7 points and 10 rebounds.
