W. Basketball Gets Home Win Over Mira Costa

The MSJC women's basketball got off to a strong start and played a solid fourth quarter to earn their 10th win in a row on Wednesday night as they defeated visiting Mira Costa 72-52.

The Eagles went ahead 8-7 midway through the first period on a pair of free throws by Deja Blue and never trailed again in the game as they built a lead of 22-11 after one.  The Spartans responded in the second quarter as they out scored the Eagles 19-17 to close the gap to 39-30 by halftime.  In the second half MSJC used a huge advantage on the boards as they pushed their lead out to as much as 15 midway through the third, and then did not allow Mira Costa to score in the final 7 plus minutes of the game to secure the victory.

Haylei Janssens had a big night for MSJC as she scored a game high 20 points and pulled in a game best 21 rebounds.  Diamonere Butler also recorded a double double in the win with 15 points and 11 boards, she scored 13 of her 15 in the second half.  Haley Suarez got the Eagles off on the right foot as she came off the bench to score all 13 of her points in the first 20 minutes.  Blue continued to show her all around game as she finished the night with 11 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals.  Julia Iman led the Spartans with 16 points.

The win was MSJC's 10th in a row and improved their overall record on the season to 11-2 headed into a week off for Christmas.  The Eagles will return to action on December 28th and 29th when they travel to Ventura College to take on LA Valley and the state's #1 ranked Ventura teams.  Game time on the 28th is 4 pm and on the 29th tip-off is scheduled for 5.  MSJC's next home game will be Wednesday January 8th when they host Victor Valley as part of an Inland Empire Athletic Conference doubleheader with the men's team.  Game times on the 8th are 5 & 7 pm.
