Long Beach closes home schedule with 2-0 win over LA Harbor

Sophomores Reina Bernal (Santa Fe HS) and Melyssa Rivas (Santa Fe HS) hit back-to-back doubles as part of a two-run fourth inning to help lead Long Beach City College to a 2-0 South Coast Conference win over visiting Los Angeles Harbor College on Tuesday at LBCC.

Long Beach closes out its regular-season home schedule with a 20-17 overall record and 10-9 mark in SCC play. The Vikings have two road games left, playing at Mt. San Antonio College on Thursday (Apr 17) and El Camino College on Tuesday (Apr 22), before awaiting a possible postseason berth.

In Tuesday's victory, the Vikings were held hitless by Harbor starting pitcher Kaila Belch, but finally broke through in the fourth.

Sophomore Emily Demers (Mary Star of the Sea HS) got the game-winning rally started with a one-out single. Bernal then followed with a double to the left-centerfield gap that scored sophomore pinch runner Alyssa Rayas (Millikan HS). On the ensuing pitch, Rivas knocked a double to the identical spot to drive in Bernal with the Vikings' second run.

Harbor (2-30, 0-19 SCC) totaled just three hits in the game off a pair of Long Beach pitchers. Sophomore Natalie Ayala (Torrance HS) gave up just one hit over the opening three innings and freshman Mary Gonzales (Banning HS) picked up the win in relief to improve to 5-6. She allowed two hits over the final four innings.

Belch (0-8) allowed two runs and four hits in the complete-game effort for the Seahawks.

Prior to the contest, LBCC honored its 10 sophomores in their final home game.
