Chargers start (1-1) to open the 2020 season

Cypresss, CA - Baseball split opening weekend with an 8-4 win over Chaffey (0-1) on Friday, followed by a 4-1 loss to Long Beach (1-0) on Saturday.

Cypress kicked off the season hosting Chaffey on Friday afternoon. Sebastian Diaz got the start for the Chargers and threw a miraculous five no-hit innings. He struck out 7 and exited the game with a 1-0 lead. In the bottom half of the fifth inning the Chargers got the scoring going when Andrew Sojka hit a triple off the wall to score Hayden Winters. After a Carson Letterman walk, with runners on first and third, Andre Sojka stole home on a throw down to second base.  Ryan Maciel singled to right field to keep the inning going and put runners on the corners again. Designated hitter, Trevor Jones doubled deep to center field and knocked in Letterman and Maciel to put the Chargers up 5-1. After a threatening ninth inning, Cypress went on to win, 8-4.

Saturday was a different story for the Chargers, as they could not get the bats going. Long Beach opened up their season on Saturday by scoring 4 runs in the second inning to take an early 4-1 lead. After a rough second inning from Jake Habelitz, Josh Landry came in and threw 4.2 innings of 5 stikeout ball. His quick delivery slowed down the Vikings offense, and it was up to the Charger offense to respond. In the bottom of the ninth Spencer Serven was hit by a pitch with 2 outs. Bobby Silvis kept the game alive with a single up the middle. The ninth inning rally fell short when Rafael Flores struck out swinging on an 88 mph fastball.

Up Next: The Charger's will host El Camino on Tuesday, January 28th, at home. First pitch is at 2:00PM.
