WOMEN'S SOCCER UNBEATEN CHABOT MAKES IT 4 FOR 4

The unbeaten Chabot College women's soccer team showed resilience on defense and attacking panache in a 2-0 win over Shasta on Sept. 13 in Hayward.

The Gladiators (4-0) entered this week riding a three-game shutout streak, having outscored four opponents 9-1 combined.

Against the Knights, Chabot had another solid effort on defense by Fedra Sanchez and Ariana Umildad, along with goalkeeper Abby Burnell.

Both sides had scoring chances in a back-and-forth first half. In the 37th minute, Chabot broke through as Briana Torres kept the ball with an assertive run in the attacking third. She passed outside in space to Kenia Hernandez, who dribbled into the box and hit a well-timed pass outside the far post to Brittany Juhala, and she scored with a shot into the lower left corner.

Chabot's Mariela DeLeon made it 2-0 in the 44th minute after another determined run by Torres on the left. She crossed into the box and DeLeon dribbled past the last defender at high speed before shooting into the lower left-hand corner of the net.

Shasta nearly halved the deficit in the final minute hitting the post/crossbar twice, but Chabot's defense and keeper managed to fight through the moment and clear the ball out.

Chabot will host Yuba College at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 17 before embarking on a two-game road trip against West Hills and Reedley.
