It was a game for the record books for the Irvine Valley men's basketball team.

But even more than that, it was a needed first win in Orange Empire Conference play.

The Lasers hit triple digits for the first time since the 2007-08 season in defeating Golden West, 101-70, Friday night at home.

It was the most points Irvine Valley has scored in a game since Nov. 29, 2007 when IVC defeated Sacramento City, 106-50, in the American River Tournament.

And that 07-08 Laser squad was a good one, finishing the year 27-5 and making the So. Cal. Regional Playoff Finals before losing a hard-fought game, 84-81, at LA Trade Tech.

A little more about that 2007-08 that was one of the best in IVC history.

That squad featured a number of Division I talents, including current Fullerton College head coach Perry Webster, Jeff Ledbetter (G League and summer league with Spurs), Kashif Watson, La'Shard Anderson, Blake Wallace and Bryce Webster, as well as Franklin Session (Drew League legend).

On Friday night, Irvine Valley, ranked No. 24 in the state, took off midway through the first half.

The Lasers were actually down, 14-13, with 10:54 left in the first half, and then led just, 21-20, with 9:21 to go.

But Irvine Valley closed the rest of the half on a 32-8 run. A three-pointer by freshman guard Devin Owens at the buzzer gave Irvine Valley a 53-28 lead at the break.

IVC shot 56.8 percent (21 of 37) from the field in the opening half, including making 8 of 14 three-pointers. Freshman forward Jesse Stines came off the bench with 16 points in the first half alone. He made four three-pointers.

Owens also made four three-pointers in the first half and had 12 points.

The Lasers rolled from there.

Irvine Valley led by as many as 40 points in the second half before winning by 31.

The Lasers had an incredible 70 points from their bench players and scored 52 points in the paint.

IVC's top three scorers were all reserves with Owens dropping 21 points to go with four rebounds and four assists.

Stines added 20 points and sophomore forward Aashad Womack contributed 12 points and a team-high in rebounds (11) and assists (five).

Freshman guard JT Robinson threw in 12 points and had eight rebounds and three assists and freshman forward Colby Waite had six points and five rebounds and sophomore guard Sean Murphy chipped in six points and three assists.

All 13 players scored for the Lasers in the win, which improved their record to 11-3 overall, 1-1 in conference and halted a two-game losing streak.

Golden West (2-12, 0-3) was led by Eric Watson, who battled all night and finished with 25 points and 12 rebounds, and Justin Kirksey, who had 17 points.

Irvine Valley is on the road for both games next week. The Lasers play at Santa Ana next Wednesday at 7 p.m. and then at Riverside on Friday at 7 p.m.
