Rascon and McCarthy Win Twice on Day One of Pairs Regionals
TORRANCE, Calif. --- The No. 1 pair for the El Camino College Beach Volleyball team scored two victories on Friday at the California Community College Beach Volleyball Pairs Southern California Regionals at the ECC Sand Courts in Torrance, Calif.
The pair of Lauren McCarthy and Fayth Rascon qualified for the upcoming CCCAA State Championships by winning their first-round match and then advanced to Saturday's final day of the regionals for a chance to play for the top seed at next week's championships.
The Warriors No. 3 pair of Leafa Juarez and Brea Rutledge drew the No. 11 seed at the regionals but could not score a victory in their two matches on Friday and were eliminated.
For Rascon and McCarthy, the 2022 South Coast Conference champions drew the No. 2 seed at the regionals and began their day with a match against the No. 31 seeded pair of Paige Cutwright and Lexy Mendoza of Orange Coast.
Rascon and McCarthy cruised to a 21-13 victory in the opening set but had to scrap and fight off a few deficits in the second set before eventually scoring a 21-17 victory in the second to secure the match and advance, automatically qualifying them for the CCCAA State Championships on May 13-14 at Irvine Valley College.
In their second-round match, Rascon and McCarthy found themselves in an early hole against No. 18 seeded Alexis Baloyo and Amelie Zubia of Ventura, dropping the first set 21-14. But the pair pulled out a tough 21-18 win in the second set and then pulled away late in the third to score a 15-8 win and advance to the winner's bracket on Saturday.
The CCCAA Beach Volleyball SoCal Regionals will wrap up on Saturday with matches beginning at 9 a.m. at the ECC Sand Courts.
