Wolverines Put Scare into No. 3 Mt. San Jacinto

In three out of four quarters Wednesday night, the San Bernardino Valley College women's basketball team outscored the state's No. 3 team.

But the one other quarter - the second Wednesday night - Mt. San Jacinto showed why it is the defending state champions.

MSJC outscored San Bernardino Valley 24-10 in the second 10 minutes, turning a one-point deficit into a 13-point halftime lead as the Eagles defeated the Wolverines 71-62 Wednesday night.

In the opening quarter, the two teams battled back-and-forth, with the Wolverines attacking the basket and getting to the free throw line - and SBVC took advantage, hitting 8-of-9 from the line.

But the Eagles heated up in the second quarter. They went on a 14-1 in the opening three-plus minutes to take control of the game. They shot 40.9 percent in the quarter, including 4-for-6 from three-point range.

SBVC did not go down quietly, though. They outscored the Eagles 17-14 in the third quarter behind nine points from Julianna Sanchez, who went back to the first quarter strategy of attacking the basket. She was 6-of-8 from the free throw line and drained a 3-pointer for the Wolverines. Meanwhile, the SBVC defense held the Eagles to only 10.5 percent shooting in the period.

Sanchez led all scorers in the game with 19 - 11 of them coming from the free throw line. Jazlyn Jackson had 14 points and pulled down 13 rebounds and Destiny Alexander added 12 and four blocked shots.
