MEN’S BASKETBALL: HORNETS OVERCOME ROADRUNNERS

The FC men's basketball team played College of the Desert on Saturday night and got past a surging Roadrunner team 72-69.

It was a non-conference home game where FC (5-0 overall) faced their biggest test of the season as COD (4-2) gave the Hornets a run for their money.

College of the Desert took a 10-4 lead in the first minutes of the game, but Fullerton fought back taking an 18-15 edge on a layup by Tawon Elston at 10:40.

FC extended their lead (25-16) by 7:48 on another bucket by Elston. By halftime, the Hornets went back to their locker room with a decent 38-30 lead helped by a shot in the paint by RJ Knibb.

Like the previous games this season, the Hornets looked put the game away the game away in the second half, however the Roadrunners had a different thought.

With Fullerton holding their largest lead of 14 (54-40) at the 12:24 mark, COD made their move climbing back into the game by 5:56.  Joshua Jones hit a big three-pointer tying the game up at 66 apiece.

The final 5 minutes of the game was an all-out war between two talented teams exchanging points until the final seconds.

With 13 seconds left in regulation, FC was up narrowly 70-69 and Jacob Eyman had 2 free throws to knock down, and he did. Up by 3 points, COD had one last chance to tie the game up, but Sylvester Franklin's shot from beyond the arch fell short.

Once again, Tawon Elston came off the bench to lead the team in scoring with 21 points. Omajae Smith put up 16 points and had 7 rebounds with 7 assists. Jacob Eyman was strong with 15 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 blocks.

Up Next: Fullerton (5-0 overall) will hit the road against Santa Monica College on Wednesday, November 20th at 7:00 pm.
