Roadrunners’ rally comes up short in loss at Mt. SAC

Left fielder Nick Ybarra went 2-for-4 to lead Rio Hondo College at the plate in the Roadrunners' 7-3 South Coast Conference loss at Mt. San Antonio on Thursday. Despite the outcome, it was a better offensive showing for Rio Hondo after being held to just one hit in Tuesday's 13-0 loss to the Mounties in the series opener.

The three-game SCC series concludes on Saturday (April 21) at 12 p.m. back in Whittier as the Roadrunners will look to avoid a sweep.

On Thursday, Mt. SAC jumped ahead 4-0 before Rio Hondo finally got on the board in the top of the seventh inning. Aiden Gutierrez hit a RBI single that drove in Steven Mendoza to snap the Mounties' 16-inning shutout streak.

Mt. SAC responded with three more runs in the bottom of the frame to put the game out of reach. In the eighth, Rio Hondo scored twice, getting a RBI ground out from Josh Sabajan that drove in Marcos Rivas while an error allowed Ybarra to come home.

Isaiah Ramos took the loss for Rio Hondo. He allowed four runs (two earned) and three hits over 5 ⅓ innings. He struck out three but walked six.

Aiden Gutierrez' one-out single in the bottom of the second inning was all that stood between a Mt. SAC no-hitter in Tuesday's series opener at Rio Hondo.

Nicko Cottone was battered in the loss for Rio Hondo. He lasted four innings and allowed eight runs in the start.
