COD Softball gets big innings in 3rd & 5th, knocks down the Eagles, 8-1

COD (17-7; 5-1) scored three runs in the third and five runs in the sixth as the Roadrunners grabbed their fifth Conference win of 2020, pushing past the Mt. San Jacinto Eagles of Menifee (1-11; 1-5), 8-1.

Desert would get onto the scoreboard first, scoring three runs in the bottom of the third. Freshman left fielder and leadoff hitter, Alejandra Ramirez (Rancho Mirage H.S.), would clobber a two out triple to left field and freshman shortstop Davia Hines (Palm Springs H.S.) would get hit-by-pitch. Hines would steal second base and Ramirez would score on an error by the Eagles third baseman, giving the Roadrunners a 1-0 lead.

Then Desert would order up a Double-Double (either of the In-N-Out SoCal variety or the Tim Horton's Canadian variety) as sophomore third baseman Lauren Robinson (La Quinta H.S.) nailed a double to center to score Hines and freshman first baseman Jaidyn Olson (Rancho Mirage H.S.) doubled to left to score Robinson, giving the Roadrunners a 3-0 lead.

Mt. San Jacinto would add a run in the top of the fourth to get the visitors within two, 3-1.

The Roadrunners offense would come alive again in the sixth as ten batters came to the plate. Robinson would lead off the inning with a double to left and sophomore catcher Natalie Avila (Rancho Mirage H.S.) would bring her home on single to left field. Olson would score on a single to left by freshman second baseman Dakota Hansen (Myrtle Beach, SC) and Avila would score on an error by the Eagles catcher. Later in the inning, Hines would crush a double to center, scoring freshman center fielder Annabelle Amador (Indio Shadow Hills) and freshman right handed starting pitcher Jessie Rios (La Quinta H.S.), making the score 8-1.
