FOOTBALL: HORNETS SCRIMMAGE AT PASADENA THIS SATURDAY

The Hornets have been working hard this summer getting in shape for the 2016 season. This Saturday, they will head up to Pasadena City College for a scrimmage against the new-look Lancers.

Former Hornet offensive assistant coach Tom Maher (2007-2015) takes back the reigns of Pasadena's football program where he was the head coach from 1996 to 2004. The one-time Mission Conference winning head coach has put together a talented team.

PCC is led this season by redshirt freshman quarterback Jesse Hanckel, a 6-foot-4, 202-pound bounceback from Fresno State, who broke every passing record at Village Christian High. The defense is paced by letterman defensive back and safety Kendell Jefferson.

Five-time conference-winning head coach Tim Byrnes has put together another contender as the Hornets have a bevy of talented players returning for the 2016 season.

The backfield is stacked with powerful and elusive running backs Pop Thomas, Phillip Butler, Anthony Wood, and Gerald Hulett.

"Our returning backs got it done last year, and we're looking for them to produce again at an even higher level. We also have some talented freshmen backs that can run", said Byrnes.

Other Hornet players to keep on eye on are DeAngelo Ross (defensive back, featured in the picture), Quentin Yontz (d-line), Emil Graves (o-line), Marshall Levins (o-line), and Nathan Trent (o-line).

The scrimmage begins with drills at 3:30 p.m. and an abbreviated game starting after 6 p.m.

Admission is free with a $10 donation accepted for dinner that is catered by local eatery Lee's Hoagie House and Patticakes of Altadena.

This is the first year that football teams across the state are holding scrimmages involving opposing colleges since 2008 when cost containment measures were passed by the CCCAA to limit the number of contests in every sport.
