Cougars Knock Off No. 1 Mt. SAC.

VENTURA, Calif. – With one second remaining in regulation, freshman guard Vikki Martinez hit 1-of-2 free throws to lead the College of the Canyons women's basketball team past No. 1 Mount San Antonio College 68-67 in the semifinal round of the Ventura College-Kiwanis Tournament of Champions on Saturday night.

Canyons (5-3) will now play in the tournament finals tomorrow at 4 p.m. against the host college, Ventura. With the loss, Mt. SAC drops to 4-1 on the season.

With the squads tied up at 67-67 with 15.1 seconds left in regulation, the Cougars pushed the ball down the floor and found an open Martinez. The Sylmar graduate missed her first shot but got fouled on the put back, allowing Canyons to go to the line with 1.0 ticks on the clock.

Sophomore forward Keiona Mathews led the team with 23 points and eight rebounds, while going 7-for-7 from the free throw line. Sophomore guard Shawn Kolani had 17 points, eight rebounds and seven assists, while Nayiri Aslanian pulled down nine rebounds.
