Pirates roll early, topple Jets, 6-0 in season opener

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College women's soccer opened the 2022 campaign with a 6-0 nonconference win over the shorthanded Miramar College Jets on Tuesday inside the OCC Soccer Complex.

Playing with just 10 players to start the match -- and with warm temps not helping matters -- the Jets did the best they could, but there too many weapons on the field for the Pirates, who scored all six of their goals in the first half before putting the game on cruise control the rest of the way.

OCC outshot the Jets 22-2 and kept the ball on the Jets' side of the turf the entire match.

Sydney Powell had two goals for the Pirates, while Briana Calderon added a goal and an assist. Other goal-scorers for Coast included Lily Carroll, Addison Tolliver and Cina Wilson, while Emma Khamo, Blythe Case, Leah Martinovich, Zoe Bacca and Michelle Campos each provided assists in a total team effort.

OCC goalkeeper Jessica Gardner had a quiet afternoon (two saves) but managed to stop the one high-quality opportunity Miramar (0-2) had and earned the shutout win.

Miramar goalkeeper Kiersti Jule Stolen did the best she could against a barrage of Pirate shots and notched 11 saves.

Coast will return to action on Wednesday at the Santa Barbara Tournament against the host Vaqueros, beginning at 6:30 p.m. OCC will wrap up its tourney action on Thursday against San Francisco, beginning at 6 p.m. Coast will return to the OCC Soccer Complex on Friday, Sept. 9 against Rio Hondo, beginning at 3 p.m. (TICKETS)
