WHITTIER - The Marauder baseball team opened its season with an 8-7 victory in 10 innings against Rio Hondo, Friday afternoon.
Ethan Avant was 3-for-4 with a home run, triple, one RBI and two runs scored for the Marauders. Eddie Marcotte and Joe Lamont each collected multiple hits for AVC (1-0). Marcotte also homered for AVC.
The Marauders led 5-3 in the top of the sixth inning and extended their lead to 6-3 following Avant's solo home run in the top of the seventh inning. The Roadrunners (0-1) rallied to tie the score 7-7 heading into the top of the 10th inning.
Kyle Lathrop reached on a fielder's choice in the top of the 10th inning which turned out to be the game-winning RBI. Austin Grabbit pitched six strong innings allowing only three runs while striking out five.
