MiraCosta Loses In Fifth Set

When Grossmont College women's volleyball came to play the MiraCosta Spartan squad it was clear that two of the top teams in the state were about to face off.  Not only was a very high level of volleyball on display but it was also a match that was very even.  In the end, the Griffins outlasted the Spartans winning the fifth set by a score of 15-13.

MiraCosta's offense was powered by multiple options for the setters to pass to.  Aria Barker, Madison Nichols, Savannah So'oto, Cameron Martinez and Makayla Hicks all had bright moments.  The setters, Giulia Cefalu and Summer Hoslett consistently found their hitters while mixing in some very successful early options over.  Paola Peralta and So'oto were steady defensively against a strong Grossmont team and MiraCosta had multiple blockers at the net including Barker, Nichols, Hicks, Abigail Ormand and So'oto.

The Spartans won the first set 25-23 with a big kill by Nichols and an important block by Hicks to finish the set.

The second and third sets went to Grossmont forcing MiraCosta into a must win fourth set.  In the fourth set the Spartans looked rejuvenated with multiple kills by Barker early, a big block by Nichols, and a critical dig by So'oto that led to the Martinez kill.  MiraCosta won the forth set 25-22 forcing a fifth set.

In the fifth set the Spartans looked dominant up 9-4 and seemingly ready to walk away with the win.  Grossmont had other ideas and scored nine straight points to take the lead 13-9.  MiraCosta hustled for a few more points but came up short dropping the match deciding set 13-15.

MiraCosta's overall record falls to 6-3 as they prepare for a match at Miramar College on Friday.
