Panthers Grab 27-25 Win at De Anza
The Panther Football team hit the road on Oct. 3 for the second time this season and came away with a 27-25 victory over DeAnza.
"We knew the environment would be a challenge, but this group is learning and improving every week," Head Coach Matt Collins said.
A 62-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter from Hartnell quarterback JP Garcia to wide receiver Josiah Freeman was the clincher. The Panther defense held on for the win.
"Our defense made some great plays down the stretch," Collins said. "Abel Escobar had a nice pass breakup that fed our sideline some energy."
JP Garcia completed 21 of 37 passes for 323 yards and added a rushing touchdown. Running back Payton Flores rushed 12 times for 71 yards and scored a touchdown. Freeman had a big day, catching four passes for 109 yards and two touchdowns. Wide receiver Angel Olivas caught three passes for 82 yards.
"Josiah is opening up the field and becoming a pretty strong weapon for us offensively," Collins said.
Defensive lineman Sergio Hernandez had a big day with three sacks. Fellow lineman Christian Campos-Rodriguez added a sack, and defensive back Jason Flores made the interception.
"I like our approach," Collins said. "Our coaching staff is doing a great job putting our guys in good spots. I tip my hat off to our guys and their effort."
The Panthers (2-2) will welcome Feather River (3-0) on Oct. 9. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Rabobank Stadium.
