Softball Wins one and Drops Two Games on Opening Weekend

BAKERSFIELD, CA – Renegade softball is back in full swing for Opening Weekend. The Bakersfield College softball team played a double header at the Dean and Adah Gay Sports Complex on Friday afternoon and evening while also playing a single game on Saturday afternoon. BC wanted to get the best match ups available and hosted three teams who all competed at State last year. BC split both games between the visiting Santiago Canyon Hawks and the Mt. San Antonio Mounties on the first day and lost the final game on Saturday against San Mateo.

In game one, Renegades brought in three runs, in the fourth and sixth inning to tie up the game (3-3). The tie was short lived when the Hawks homered on a 0-1 count to bring in two runs in the 7th while Bakersfield was unable to counter act. Santiago won 5-3 over BC. Sophomore Shelbie Valencia went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead BC in hits.

In the second game, Bakersfield got out on a four-run lead in the first inning and held on an 8-7 victory over Mt. Sac. Scoring came from Rylee Price(a double), Anika Romo (a double), a single by Destiny Cuellar and a wild pitch by Alyna Ruiz in the first inning. Renegades had a total of 10 hits. Kadyn Smith took the win, she had five runs on three hits over four innings, striking out one.

For the final game of the weekend, the Renegades faced the defending State Champions, the Bulldogs. BC kept it a close game tying in runs in the first and the second but in the third SM showed their skills and took control of the game and beat the Gades 13-3.

The Renegades go 1-2 at the start of the season. Bakersfield will head out on the road, Tuesday January 31st to take on Ventura College.
