(Walnut, CA) The Mt. SAC Men's Soccer Team (14-5-6) nearly reached the pinnacle, but lost to a familiar foe in South Coast Conference rival Cerritos College, 3-1, in the CCCAA Men's Soccer Championship Game, held at the Mt. SAC Soccer Fields, on Sunday.
The host Mounties, quickly fell behind in the 5th minute of play and then fell behind, 2-0, in the 52nd minute of play.
Mt. SAC finally scored in the 58th minute of play when Jose Dheming narrowed the lead to 2-1, when he tapped in a goal on an assist from Danny Moreno. For the next 28 minutes, a defensive battle ensued, but in the 86th minute of play, Cerritos closed the books on the Mounties with Connor Johnson's (Championship MVP) third goal of the morning.
Mt. SAC played in three double overtime games in the playoffs including in the Semi Final Match, where the Mounties defeated DeAnza College in PK's (Penalty Kick Shoot-Out), after a 1-1 tie in double overtime.
The Mounties were led this season by Sophomore, Forward, Dheming and Freshman, Forward, Julio Velasquez, who led the team with 7 goals on the year. On defense, they were led by Sophomore, Goalkeeper, Jorge Becerra, who had an outstanding tournament and Freshman, Goalkeeper, Daniil Slepukhin
Congratulations to Mountie Head Coach, Juan Sanchez who led the Mounties to their 8th consecutive CCCAA State Championship appearance.
