Volleyball team ready for more OEC play after sweep of Jaguars

The Irvine Valley women's volleyball team took care of business on Wednesday night.

The Lasers, on their bye night from Orange Empire Conference play, traveled far South to Chula Vista and swept Southwestern.

IVC, ranked No. 11 in the state, swept the Jaguars, 25-14, 25-23, 25-15, and improved its record to 5-1 overall.

Irvine Valley gets back to OEC action on Friday at Riverside at 6 p.m.

IVC has played five of its first six matches on the road so far this season and Friday will make six of seven.

But, the long trip and another match away didn't phase the Lasers on Wednesday. They cruised in the first set, battled in a tough second set and then pulled away late in the third game.

Tied, 12-12, in the third set, Irvine Valley closed by winning 13 of the final 16 points.

The squad had several big performances, including by (picured) freshman middle blocker Kendall Fraser and freshman outside hitter Emily Guenter.

Guenter ended with eight kills, three aces and 16 digs and freshman middle blocker Fraser finished with eight kills and three blocks.

Freshman outside hitter Jaclyn Sanchez also had eight kills and eight digs, freshman opposite Jayli Nealy added six kills and six blocks, sophomore libero Alexandra Pestolis contributed 12 digs and freshman setter Maddie Harkey chipped in 34 assists and six digs.

IVC hit .284 as a team on the night and had 59 digs.
