Women's Soccer Wins Over Solano To Advance In CCCAA Playoffs

By a 2-1 margin, Reedley College won its first-ever women's soccer playoff match on Thursday in Fairfield.

Head Coach Onesta Francis' squad, seeded 17th, recorded a 2-1 double-overtime victory over the 16th seeded Solano College Falcons in an out bracket contest in the Northern California Community College Athletic Association women's soccer playoffs.

With the win, Reedley now travels to Stockton to face the second-seeded San Joaquin Delta Mustangs, who won the Big 8 Conference with a 15-0-1 record. The match is set for 2 pm on Saturday. Delta brings a 15-match winning streak and an overall record of 20-0-2 into the contest. Reedley improved to 9-8-3 overall with the win over Solano.

"It was a good game," said Coach Francis. "Their goalkeeper was top notch. We played some of our best passing strings ever. We went down 1-0 early in the second half. Their number 14 (Isabella Kelly-Fondersmith) hit a rocket and our goalkeeper (Sarah Cabrera) lost it in the sun. Our goalkeeper bounced back and assisted the first goal, sending a long pass to her sister (Sabrina Cabrera)." The tying goal came in the 50th minute.

"Destiny Gonzalez set up the last goal by dribbling past their left-back and cutting into Kiki Sunamoto, who buried it in the corner." The match-winner came in the 111th minute.

West Hills Lemoore, the other Central Valley Conference team competing in the play-in contests on Thursday, fell to West Valley on penalty kicks after a scoreless tie after regulation play and overtime.
