Mt. SAC Men's Soccer

(Walnut, CA) For the second game in a row, the Mt. SAC Men's Soccer Team scored five goals by five different players, en route to a 5-0 shutout over visiting Long Beach City College on Friday (Oct. 11).

"Yes, it has been very balanced scoring by us lately," Mt. SAC Men's Soccer Coach Juan Sanchez said.

The conference victory by states number one ranked team, improves the Mounties overall record to 11-0-1, with a conference record of 2-0.

The unbeaten streak is the best start by the Mounties since 2011, when the Mounties were unbeaten in 25 games and finished the season with their fourth consecutive CCCAA State Championship. Previously, Mt. SAC had a 24-game unbeaten streak in 2007. That year, the Mounties tied Taft, 1-1, in the state semifinals, but Taft advanced to the state championship game on PK's.

In 2009, the Mounties had a 19-game unbeaten streak to start the season and eventually won their first state title.

Scoring for the Mounties was Angel Santoyo, Anthony Vargas, Alan Piceno, Guilherme Farias and Travis Piceno.

With his ninth goal of the season, Santoyo put the Mounties on the scoreboard, 1-0, in the 12th minute on the first of two consecutive assists from midfielder Gerardo Cazares. The goal was the ninth for Santoyo, which places him in a tie for eighth in the state. Cazares leads the team with eight assists on the season, which is the second most in the state.

Two minutes later, Vargas (14th minute) gave Mt. SAC a quick, 2-0, lead. The goal was the first of the season for the freshman midfielder.

A third goal (38th minute) late in the opening half by Alan Piceno (6th this season), on an assist from midfielder Paul Iniguez, put the Mounties up 3-0.

"(Alan) Piceno got the third goal by spinning the defender and getting a breakaway goal from almost half the field," said Sanchez, of the goal by Piceno. "He chipped the goalie to finish it off."

The scoring barrage continued for Mt. SAC in the second half, at the 54-minute mark, with the fourth of the season for Farias (Santoyo) that gave the Mounties a 4-0 lead.

"The fourth goal was a great combination play," Sanchez said. "It ended with Angel (Santoyo) playing a nice pass to Farias for the finish."

Completing the scoring for Mt. SAC in the 89th minute, was Travis Piceno, who scored on an assist from Vargas.

The Mounties continue SCC action with a game at Compton Friday (Oct. 18).
