Mounties win two, lose two at West Valley Invitational

Mt. SAC Women's Water Polo getting ready to compete

(Saratoga, CA) The Mt. SAC Women's Water Polo team took to the road, September 17, 18, and made the trek to West Valley College in Saratoga and split four games.

Mt. SAC (3-6) opened the West Valley College Invitational on Friday with a pair of losses to San Joaquin Delta (15-6) and host West Valley (15-7).

On Saturday, the Mounties bounced back and won two games over Merced (7-6) and Foothill (9-4).

Sophomore attacker Julia Bensing-Ruiz led the team in the invitational with nine goals, while sophomore utility Katelynn Howell had five goals and freshman attacker Alexis Ramirez and sophomore utility Xen Allen added four each.

Bensing-Ruiz and Howell scored five and three goals, respectively, in the two losses against San Joaquin and West Valley on Friday.

Mt. SAC 7, Merced 6

In the game-one win on Saturday over Merced, freshman 2-meter Madison Nicholas scored a pair of goals in the first period and Ramirez and freshman 2-meter Elizabeth Chong each scored a goal in the second period to give the Mounties a 4-1 lead at the half.

Merced outscored the Mounties, 2-1, in the third period to close the gap to 5-3 and tied the game, 5-5, with less than five minutes left.

Bensing-Ruiz gave the Mounties a 6-5 lead 30 seconds later, but Merced again tied the game, 6-6 with 2:52 left.

With a man advantage in the last two minutes, sophomore attacker Grace Rowland passed to Ramirez who scored the go-ahead goal for the 7-6 lead.

Mt. SAC freshmen goalkeepers Kelly Jackson (3 Saves) and Jahanna Palmer (6 SV) split time between the pipes for the Mounties in the game.

Mt. SAC 9, Foothill 4

Bensing-Ruiz again had a three-goal game, this time leading her team to a second consecutive win.

Trailing Foothill, 3-2, heading into the third period, the Mounties scored three consecutive goals to take a 5-3 lead by Howell and Ruiz (2 goals).

Mt. SAC finished off Foothill in the fourth period, outscoring the Owls, 4-1, for the win.

Jackson and Palmer again split time in goal and had four saves each.

The Mounties will host the annual Mt. SAC Women's Water Polo Classic at the Marie T. Mills Aquatics Center September 24, 25.
