Bakersfield Ends their Season in a Playoff Matchup against Long Beach

BAKERSFIELD, CA – The Bakersfield College women's basketball team hosted their first playoff game in seven years at Gil Bishop Sports Center. The Renegades knew taking on the #9 Long Beach City Vikings was not going to be an easy task, but the Renegades persevered and played their hearts out in front of a full crowd. Unfortunately, there could only be one winner and tonight LBC won over BC, 69-59.

A back-and-forth battle for both teams in the first period. Each team went point for point and BC ended the first with a one-point lead, 15-14. Into the second period the game started getting more physical. At least 13 fouls were given in the second alone from both Long Beach and Bakersfield. The first half continue to go point for point with a total of 14 lead changes until the Vikings took over the second quarter in the final three minutes of the half and went to the locker room with the lead, 36-28.

Leading the Renegades in the first half was sophomore Jenna Sampley with six-points. Bakersfield bench helped the team, shooting 11 points compared to LBC's 2.

Bakersfield continued to struggle offensively in the third and ended the quarter down, 44-52. BC started slashing the Vikings lead in the final quarter of the game giving the Gades and fans hope again. Sophomore Brianna Green scored two consecutive three pointers to bring the Renegades just down by four points (56-60) with five minutes left in the contest. An offensive foul from LBC would give the Gades a much needed two points to get the game back neck to neck (58-60). Unfortunately, Long Beach's defensive stayed strong and Bakersfield offensive slowed down in the final two minutes.

Green led the team with 14 points, while Kathleen Rodriguez ended the night with 11 rebounds.

Renegades wrapped up their 2021-22 season with an overall record of 19 wins and 7 losses and a first time playoff berth in seven years. Six teammates will be saying goodbye to BC but nine will hopefully be returning to the team.
