COD Football beats Vaqueros for first time, wins on the road, 54-50

COD (3-1) went on the road and defeated the Glendale Vaqueros (2-2) for the first time in program history, winning the game, 54-50.

Sophomore quarterback Cesar Vela (Rancho Mirage H.S.) had his best game of the season, as he tossed for 219 yards and 3 scores. Vela was also nearly perfect, going 24 of 25 and his offensive line was amazing as they did not allow a sack all game for the first time this season. Sophomore running back Arieon Capler (Palm Springs H.S.) had the second-best rushing day of his career, as he had 123 yards on 18 carries and a score. Freshman kickoff returner Dejon Packard (Phoenix (AZ) Camelback) had two kick off returns for touchdowns, including the game winner, an 89 yard return with 29 seconds left.

For Desert, the first game in program history against the Glendale Vaqueros was back in 1972. Since the Roadrunner's first contest against Glendale, they had never beaten them until this year's game when our 2022 squad cut into the Vaqueros' winning streak against the COD Football program. Desert now has a 1-5 all-time record against the Vaqueros, including a 1-2 record in Glendale. For the Roadrunner's next event, they will travel to compete against the Los Angeles Southwest Cougars of West Athens on Saturday, October 1st for the first time since 1989. Desert holds an overall record of 5-2 and an away record of 1-2 against the Cougars. The next home game for the Roadrunners will happen on Saturday, October 15th at 6:00p against the Pasadena City Lancers. The theme for this upcoming home game is to wear pink attire to spread cancer awareness. Desert first played against the Lancers in 1992, holding a 1-5 overall record against them and an 1-1 record in the Robert F. Boone Field.
