Moorpark defense, special teams anchors win over Grossmont

In two wins this season, there's one common denominator for the Moorpark College football team: it finds a way.

The Raiders (2-2) had just 136 yards of total offense in their 34-24 home win over Grossmont College Saturday night, but the defense had six sacks and forced four turnovers, including three interceptions, and the special teams had a blocked punt and a kick return for a score, too.

Two of the interceptions were returned for touchdowns by Ty Ely and Arnulfo Morales. The blocked punt was returned for a score by Michael GaribayDaniel Pierce returned a punt for a 63-yard touchdown. Those four plays accounted for all of Moorpark's touchdowns.

Moorpark held a 22-3 lead at halftime before Ely's pick-six made it a comfortbale 29-3 lead in the third quarter. Grossmont scored 14 unanswered points, but a Daniel Burke field goal created a 32-17 lead before Grossmont score one last time.

The biggest challenge for the Raiders has been themselves. Moorpark tallied 15 penalties for 131 yards Saturday night, which added to the team's 43 total penalties for 449 yards in four games.

However, Moorpark certainly has plenty to be proud of, especially its defense, which has three touchdowns already this season.

The Raiders are 2-0 at home this fall, but are still looking for their first road win. They'll get a chance Friday night (Sept. 30) at Pasadena City College (2-2). Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
