Mt. SAC Football Opens Season with Win Over Bakersfield, 34-7

Mt. SAC Football Offense looking to score

(Bakersfield, CA) For the ninth time in the last 13 years, the Mt. SAC Football Team defeated Bakersfield College. The latest was a season-opening, 34-7 victory Saturday (Sept. 7) at the newly renovated Bakersfield Memorial Stadium.

"I am very pleased with the win and the effort of our football team," Mt. SAC Football Coach Bob Jastrab said.

Making his debut at quarterback for the Mounties was Zach Rangel, who tossed two touchdowns. The Round Rock, Texas native was 15 for 21 for 184 yards, with interceptions.

On the ground, the Mounties were led by Running back Rachaad White with two TD's runs of 13 and 44 yards. White ran for a game-high 144 yards on 13 carries.

The Mountie defense was led by Aneas Forman with two sacks for -20 yards. As a team, Mt. SAC defenders totaled four sacks in the game and held the Renegade running backs to a net 39 yards in the game and recovered two fumbles.

"Our defense played very well," Jastrab added. "Our goal is to clean up our mistakes and improve every day."

Mountie wide receiver Dakota Warfield added 93 yards on four receptions and a touchdown to lead all wide outs.

Brandon Quinones' only catch of the game was good for a 20-yard TD, while Jonathan Schofield's only run of the game was also a 7-yard score.

The Mountie offense exploded for 420 total yards (236 rushing, 184 passing) in the game.

A long 89-yard drive late in the opening quarter was culminated with the first of two rushing TD's by Rachaad.

After Quinones gave the Mounties a 13-0 lead with his 20-yard TD reception early in the second quarter, Bakersfield defensive back Fano Maui picked off Rangel for a 28-yard interception return and the Renegades were back in the game.

On Mt. SAC's next possession, it took a mere four plays and 1:50 to extend the lead to 20-7, with the 53-yard TD reception by Warfield.

Mt. SAC's defense aided the Mounties early in the third quarter, as defensive back Levon Barnett blocked a Bakersfield punt to give the offense good field position at the 14-yard line.

Four plays later, Schofield gave the Mounties a 27-7 lead with 11:06 left in the quarter.

With less than a minute left in the third quarter, White ran in his second score of the game for the 34-7 lead. The TD was set up by a 24-yard punt return by Schofield.

The Mounties will travel to Long Beach next Saturday to take on the VIkings.
