Men’s Soccer: Rio Hondo season ends on PKs; earns 7 All-SCC honors

Penalty kicks once again decided who would advance in Rio Hondo College's second-round Southern California Regional playoff game at Long Beach City College. But this time, the No. 11-seeded Roadrunners came out on the losing end, falling 4-2 to the No. 6-seed Vikings in a penalty kick shootout that would ultimately end an impressive season for Rio Hondo.

The playoff contest is officially recorded as a tie as neither team was able to find the back of the net after 90 minutes of regulation and a pair of 15-minute overtime periods.

The Roadrunners end the 2022 season with an 11-9-5 overall record after capturing a share of the South Coast Conference North Division championship with a 5-3-1 mark.

ALL-SOUTH COAST CONFERENCE

Following the close of the regular season, the Roadrunners received seven All-South Coast Conference postseason honors.

Head coach Orlando Brenes was rewarded for his championship season by being named the SCC North Division Coach of the Year. For Brenes, it was his first SCC coaching honor since Rio Hondo joined the conference in 2016.

Named first-team All-SCC North Division were sophomore defender Sebastian Bibian, sophomore midfielder Ebenezer Chinne, and sophomore forward Rogelio Silva.

Second-team honors went to sophomore goalkeeper Arturo Bustamante Jr, sophomore defender Malachi Hernandez, and sophomore defender Alexis Perez.

Bibian, Bustamante, and Hernandez were two-time All-SCC award recipients.
