In sports, all the statistical advantages in the world don't mean anything if you can't score.

That was the case on Tuesday as the San Bernardino Valley College men's soccer team played one of its most techincally strong games of the season, yet lost 3-0 to College of the Desert in Inland Empire Athletic Conference play.

The Wolverines out controlled and outshot the Roadrunners throughout the game, but could not find a crack in Desert's swarming defense. SBVC outshot the visitors 19-8 (7-5 on goal) in the game, forced more corners (7-3) and generally had more possession across the full 90 minutes.

But let downs on the defensive end cost the Wolverines in the end. In the seventh minute, a failed clearance ended up bounding toward the back post, where Ezequiel Minero was waiting for an easy tap in for a 1-0 lead for Desert.

Again in the 42nd minute, it was a turnover in the defensive third from the SBVC defense that ended up in the back of the net, as Gilbert Uribe found Erick Guzman with a quick pass, and Guzman's shot fooled goalkeeper Arturo Magana for a 2-0 halftime lead.

Desert put the game away in the 50th minute. A quick ball up field caught the Wolverines flat footed. Leyver Guzman sent a diagonal ball through to the left wing, where Guzman finished for his second goal of the game.

The rest of the game was filled with the Wolverines probing the Desert defense for chances, controlling play and tatically building up for each attack. But each one went astray, or was stopped by goalkeeper Uriel Lopez, who made seven saves for the shutout.
